Department of Space was founded by Ben McCoy.

Aside from working with great people, the most rewarding part for me is when a project is constructed, seeing the original concepts come to fruition. I like it when the rubber hits the road. Over the course of a project many factors push and pull the original design intent and it often requires a sustained effort to carry the torch to the end. Being closely involved in all phases of the project is important to provide this oversight and stewardship.

With over 20 years of experience in a wide variety of project types, Ben provides hands on service from concept to completion. He has successfully led projects of intense complexity, and prides himself on creating lasting relationships that facilitate project communication and cooperation. Project experience includes Higher Education Campus Design, Creative Office Repositioning, Theme Park Design, Mixed-Use, Multifamily Residential, Single Family Residential, and Healthcare.

Growing up in Minneapolis, Ben explored the urban wilderness as a child, finding memorable and forgotten spaces throughout his neighborhood and beyond. A curious explorer, he continues to seek out unique and hidden places, enjoying with wonderment the impact of space on human emotion. Ben is the father of two wonderful boys who now occupy the majority of his free time.
